Founded in 1869, the Municipality of Vesilahti is located in the Pirkanmaa area, belongs to the economic region of Tampere, and is located only 30 kilometers from Tampere.

What to do in Vesilahti...?

Lakes cover 52 square kilometres of the total area -Go fishing all you want, since water is everywhere.

There are 60 lakes in the forests such as Lake Suonojärvi and Lake Arajärvi, 250 km shores lines. Great for large Pike fishing! Lake Pyhäjärvi, the central lake in the water system of Kokemäenjoki, surrounds the entire north-eastern part of Vesilahti.

  • Ice-swimming at LVU. Open Wednesdays from 4.30pm to 9pm; Address: Punkalaitumentie 474, Narva (Vesilahti). Two euros per go.

Long time ago...Fisherman, fur-traders and alike, decided to come and settle in Vesilahti, Finland.

Why?


Vesilahti is a perfect location, easy to access by water...making Vesilahti one of the oldest settled areas in the region of Pirkanmaa. 8000 years

There was habitation in Vesilahti as early as the Iron Age. Hence...The word 'Vesa' means : 'Tent of the Lapp people' as in the Vesaniemi area -The land on which the Vesilahti church is built.

The national Epic, 'Kalevala' has it's roots in Vesilahti. 

The famous Finnish poet...and influential Laukko owner 'Törngren' were friends.

Elias Lönnrot, spent 8 consecutive years, of 25 total years, at Laukko. The poet referred to the 'Laukko' area in his ballad, The death of Elina found in the book the "Kanteletar."

Vesilahti is 160 kilometres from Helsinki, and 130 kilometers from Turku...

  • or visit a local cafe (also a kiosk) Koskenvoima in Koskenkylä. They have freshly baked goodies every day.

  • Pub Tikka offers nice lunches in the center of Kirkonkylä


61 percent of Vesilahti is forest, of which 21 percent is agricultural land.

What is left after that? Yep, you guessed right! Clean Clear Countryside air. Near a summer cottage of course!

There are around 1.700 holiday residences in Vesilahti. And that is also why Vesilahti doubles it's population during the holiday season.

What to do in Vesilahti ?  Go on a short nature hike.


This hike is more than just an average hike in the Finnish woods
since it bears historical meaning to Vesilahti.

Many forests in Vesilahti consist of moraine. That is...the forest ground surface is somewhat sandy, soft, with patches of dark top-soil.
Nice to walk in.

    No worries, the Vikings have moved out long ago. In recent years, Vesilahti has attacted families with children.


    Meeting locals - Let us talk local 'lingo' now - No need to know too much Finnish!

    Here it goes...

    When you meet some local Vesilahti-ite, and says: blah blah blah...Kirkonkylä.  That just means the very center of Vesilahti. Yep, that is right..where the wooden church is and the tourist offices are. Kirkonkylä is the parish village and has the largest population centres.

    You may have a friend living in Narva or Ylämäki/Koskenkylä. Narva is a 10 minute drive west of Kirkonkylä. Ylämäki/Koskenkylä is 5 km from the Kirkonkylä. Other populated centres are:

    • Onkemäki -A primary school is located there in the smack of nowhere, also historically played a key role in defending Vesilahti.

    • Krääkkiö - Really way out in the countryside, but a nice drive through, while driving from Narva to Sastamala, go on this scenic route via Krääkiö. Please make sure to use the navigator, since the roads branch here and there.

    • Rämsöö - A summer theater and swimming beach, a place to ice-hole fish in winter.

    A large proportion of the population commutes to work in the neighbouring municipalities. 51 percent of the population work in the service sector or approximately 150 enterprises which operate in Vesilahti.
